ABOUT KYSG

Kibera youth self help group (KYSG) is a community based organization which engages in socio-economic activities to improve the living standards of its members and the community at large.The group is based in Kianda village of the sprawling Kibera slums. It draws membership from the youths within Kibera. The members are mainly school leavers, reformed street boys, orphans and jobless youth who have no means of income.

The group was registered under the ministry of social and cultural services in August 2001.Currently it has 30 registered members and works with about 200 youths in Kibera. Upon inception the group embarked on improving the environmental sanitation of their area by engaging in solid waste management initiative.

The group has a vision of having transformed and responsible youth in the community. In order to achieve the vision, the group aims at empowering group members and the community socially and economically using potential resources available.

The objectives of the group are:
  • Create employment opportunities through initiation of income generating activities.
  • Mentor and role model the youths.
  • Raise awareness and seek solutions on social, economical and environmental issues.
  • Identify and develop potential talents of youths and;
  • Offer care and support to orphans and vulnerable children.
